Fourth of July Special: How American is Your Car?
In just a few days, we will be celebrating American Independence Day once again. As a Fourth of July tribute, we would like to discuss a simple question in this article. How American is the car you are driving?
With this question in mind, what you might be thinking is if your car is of American origin. But through our society’s ever-evolving landscape, American has changed its definition.
A specific car model or a car brand isn’t as easy to identify as American. Back then, when you say American car brand, it is more common to mention Chrysler Corporation, General Motors, and Ford Motor Company. These companies are as American as hot dogs, baseball, and apple pie. (Chevrolet used these three logos in the ‘70s to embrace their American identity).
But now, you have to consider several factors to determine whether your car is a true blue American or not. Some of the well-known American-based car companies are Cadillac, Buick, GMC, Chevrolet, Dodge, Chrysler, Ram, Jeep, Lincoln, Tesla, and Ford.
The Car Making Landscape Has Changed
There are American car companies that are bought by foreign companies. Like that of Chrysler, which was purchased by Fiat. Moreover, the 11 car companies mentioned above are assembling their vehicles outside the U.S. On the other hand, foreign car brands like Mercedes-Benz and Honda are assembling in and sourcing parts from America. So what now is a true-blooded American car?
The NHTSA and NAFTA also have their own outline of determining an American car based on their car parts percentage. It makes the issue even more difficult.
Your American Car Brands and Models
This list includes cars that are assembled in the U.S.A. with more than half of its total parts sourced from North America. This includes 2018 model light trucks and cars. You might be surprised which cars made it on the list and which do not.
